Supercritical Fluids and Green Bioanalysis

Green chemistry is a chemical philosophy encouraging the design of products and chemical processes that minimize the use and production of hazardous substances. In bioanalysis, the application of green chemistry has been focused on replacing hazardous solvents and maximizing the efficiency of bioanalytical processes. Supercritical fluids have great potential as green solvents in bioanalysis, for both sample extraction and chromatographic analysis. Furthermore, supercritical fluids have received renewed interest as bioanalytical solvents as a result of the global acetonitrile shortages of 2008, which forced many laboratories to explore alternative solvents. This Special Focus Issue of teh peer-reviewed journal Bioanalysis highlights applications and recent progress with the use of supercritical fluids in bioanalytical laboratories.
