‘India Coal’ provides an overview that includes India’s coal production, consumption, import and export, distribution and the price of coal. Coal is the predominant primary energy source in India. About 73% of the total demand for commercial fuel in the country is now met by coal. In India, the coal industry is dominated by one of the world’s largest coal mining companies, Coal India Ltd. (CIL), a central government undertaking. Nearly all of India's 390 mines are controlled by CIL, which accounts for about 90% of the country’s coal production. Currently, the Indian government is actively pursuing the development of between five and seven large coal-fired power projects with combined capacity of 48 gigawatts.

This report also provides the market trends and outlook of the coal industry. Global consumption decreased 0.23% y/y in 2009. Asia Pacific was the leading coal consumption region comprising 58% of the world’s total consumption. China consumed 46% of the coal and USA took up 15%, meanwhile, India consumed 8%. Coal continues to be the cardinal fossil fuel in India. In 2008, it accounted 71.77% of the country’s electricity need. The majority of the electricity is generated from the thermal power stations which depend upon coal as feed stock. Coal use for electricity generation in India is projected to grow by 2.4 percent per year. Steel & Washery took up 7.76% of the coal consumption, meanwhile other industries consumed 15.63%
