South Korea Telecommunications Report Q3 2010
Business Monitor International, July 2010, Pages: 83
Business Monitor International's South Korea Telecommunications Report provides industry professionals and strategists, corporate analysts, telecommunication associations, government departments and regulatory bodies with independent forecasts and competitive intelligence on South Korea's telecommunications industry.
In this quarter’s South Korea Telecommunications Report, BMI has provided new data for Q110 on the mobile, fixed-line and broadband sectors.
During the quarter ended March 2010, South Korea’s mobile market rose by 2.2% quarter-on-quarter (qo- q to 48.979mn. Growth in the sector is slowing, not least of all with penetration rates finally reaching 100%. While we are forecasting growth of just 6.7% in 2010, our continued expectations of the market expanding given the high penetration rates relates to the demand for 3G services. Operators have increasingly invested in wireless data services as they deploy 3G networks, while Smartphone penetration rates have risen dramatically, also leading to strong growth in the 3G sector.
Furthermore, this growth in 3G should also see strong growth in terms of mobile broadband services for the broadband market. While South Korea has one of the most mature broadband markets in the world, there is a shifting pattern in terms of broadband access type. While the majority of broadband access still remains via LAN, with 7.954mn subscribers as of March 2010, and xDSL, also with 3.087mn, we are also seeing a rise in fibre-to-the-home (FTTH), which has the ability to provide faster services. By the end of Q110, there were 2.678mn FTTH subscribers.
In addition, this growth in broadband services is also fuelling IPTV services as operators look to offer several services under a single package. At the end of March 2010, there were a total of 2.577mn IPTV subscribers, up from 1.560mn in Q109. Driving this growth are KT and SK Broadband, which both aim to double their subscriber figures by YE10.
South Korea’s position in BMI’s latest Business Environment Ratings table remains unchanged in third place behind Singapore and ahead of Australia. While the telecommunications industry in South Korea continues to report growth, we remain concerned about its political and economic stability. Politically, escalating ties with North Korea and the expectations for an economic downturn in 2011 could lead the country’s standing in our ratings to fall.
