Information about the fresh vegetables market and its state in March 2010.

The aim of the research is to describe the situation on the Russian market of fresh vegetables, to present actual information about volumes of production, exports, imports, consumption, state of the market, and also previous changes in 2009.

At the moment the situation on the vegetable market remains relatively stable. The good harvest in 2009 has helped to provide for enough vegetables in the winter-spring seasons in 2009-2010. The largest market size in 2009 was of potatoes (5.5 million tons). The smallest size of the market in 2009 was of other root vegetables, for example, the market size of carrots was 371.94 tons. The leader of the volume of imports in 2009 was tomatoes: there were 695.67 thousand tons of products. In the Russian Federation has been an increase in vegetable consumption per capita. The highest level of consumption was in the Southern Federal District - 112.3 kilograms per capita, and the lowest amount (81.5 kg) in the Urals Federal District. Considering the potato as a separate category, it accounts for the largest consumption of the inhabitants of the Siberian Federal District (86.3 kg per person), the lowest - in the Volga Federal District (69.9 kg per person).

The average prices by vegetable growers until June 2009 were at the level of 2008. The good harvest has lead to the fact that in July began a traditional seasonal decline in producer prices, which continued until November 2009. The retail prices of vegetables were also at the level of 2008. The lowering of the retail prices started in July and lasted until November 2009. Production prices will increase, but their growth rate may be somewhat lower than in 2008. And although retail prices of vegetables will increase throughout the winter-spring period of 2009-2010, their growth rates will be low. The profitability of the vegetable growing industry, the improvement of plant breeding, the change of effective demand, the structure of nutrition in 2010 may influence the development of vegetable production.
