Mexico: A Mobile Surge with New Competition and More 3G Services

The Mexican telecom market generated $22.9bn in service revenue in 2009. We expect it to be worth $23.9bn in 2010, a 4.4% increase mainly as a result of the expansion of mobile data and broadband. The sector will expand at a CAGR of 7.9% over the next five years to generate $34.9bn in 2015. The fastest growth segments will be fixed VoIP, broadband Internet and mobile data. Mobile and fixed voice, although growing more slowly, will remain the principal source of revenue for all operators in the market.
Increasing competition among incumbent Telmex and regional cable groups is fueling the adoption of broadband access and the migration to IP-based services. The most valuable opportunities are the creation of customized bundled offers for the medium- and low-strata segments, especially in services such as broadband and pay-TV, as well as value-added offers in the mobile segment, which will spur the use of mobile applications.
