Telecom Carriers as Cloud IT Contenders
Saugatuck Technology, Aug 2010, Pages: 5
What Cloud-based opportunities should telecom carriers embrace? Given their history, there are some logical beginnings. Carriers offered the very first cloud based services when they introduced Centrex services a half-century ago. In the late '80s and early '90s, enterprise-class carriers offered up functions like network call redirect and IVR/VRU services on a per-use basis. Twelve years ago, some got into the CoLo and hosting business. The core nature of carriers aligns quite well with many of the competencies required of cloud infrastructure providers. But what about the future? Can carriers successfully transition to becoming PaaS and possibly SaaS providers?
This Strategic Perspective addresses some of the technical, business and cultural opportunities and challenges facing carriers that seek to go 'up the stack' as cloud providers.
