Visitor Arrivals Return To Growth In Q110

Data released by the Indian Ministry of Tourism in April 2010 show that tourist arrivals began to grow again in early 2010, after declining by 6% year-on-year (y-o-y) in 2009. In Q110, visitor arrivals totalled 1.5mn, up by 12.8% y-o-y. Moreover, arrivals in March also showed high growth, of 12.9% y-o-y to 472,000 visitors. This continues a trend of high growth that began in late 2009, when December’s arrivals increased by 21.0% y-o-y, rebounding from a particularly poor performance in December 2008. It is highly positive that India has maintained strong levels of visitor growth in 2010, indicating that the industry recovery is well underway. This will have positive implications for domestic companies in terms of earnings, with foreign earnings from tourism having surged above levels of arrivals growth. In March 2010, foreign exchange earnings from tourism reached US$1.2bn, representing growth of 39.4% y-o-y over March 2009. As such, we believe India is beginning to return to its pre-2008 growth trends, with the Commonwealth Games in October 2010 providing a further boost to the recovering tourism sector.

Focus On Rajasthan

Rajasthan’s northernmost location and varied attractions make it a one of India’s most visited states, particularly on tours of northern India. Between 2000 and 2008, foreign tourist arrivals growth in the state averaged 10-15% per year, with domestic tourism also booming. However, the state suffered in 2009, with tourist arrivals falling by 10.7% y-o-y to 26.6mn. But with the industry recovering, tourist arrivals to Rajasthan should pick up again in 2010, with international tourism expected to rebound particularly strongly.

Kingfisher Airlines To Join Oneworld Alliance

Privately owned Indian carrier Kingfisher Airlines is to join the global airline alliance Oneworld in H211, potentially beating state-owned carrier Air India to this goal. Despite only launching international routes in September 2008, the airline has grown strongly and in early 2010 had a 23% share of the Indian carrier market. Joining the Oneworld alliance will allow Kingfisher to strengthen its ties with fellow members British Airways, American Airlines and Qantas, encouraging more code-sharing and tie-ups. Oneworld’s decision is a vote of confidence in Kingfisher and its rapid expansion, with the airline operating a fleet of 66 aircraft by May 2010, flying to 63 Indian and seven international destinations.
