Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for Counter-Insurgency – Global Market & Technologies Outlook – 2010-2015

Market Intel Group (MiG), April 2010, Pages: 190

Current US government policy regarding combat operations in the Near East will result in significant impact on the size and makeup of UAV market sectors. This is one of the conclusions of a new "Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for Counter-Insurgency Global Market & Technologies Outlook 2010-2015"

US policy requires turning combat operations in the Near East over to indigenous forces from now through July, 2011. That policy does not outline clearly what will happen to Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) deployments. If UAVs are withdrawn by mid 2011 or soon after, several major UAV markets will collapse due to over supply. This trend is already seen for the Raven, a ubiquitous Micro UAV that is now over-stocked and so no longer included in the American military's budget requests

That conclusion, and others, are included in a detailed “Triple Scenario” analysis, as part of MiG's latest UAV report. It appears that a significant reduction in combat operations in the Near East will leave the US with more than enough High Altitude and Jet Stream UAVs – types that have proven highly successful for both operators and vendors. But, US export restrictions prevent the sale of such aircraft outside of NATO and domestic airspace restrictions prohibit their commercial use. Taken together, those factors bode ill for several widely recognized UAV models, should today’s US policy be implemented as designed.

The current steady state of low intensity conflict, and a new regional conflict involving one or more NATO nations, comprise the other two scenarios analyzed in the new report. It is the second of three UAV reports in a series that started with 'UAVs for Border Security' and that will also include a detailed analysis of UAV’s Commercial Applications market worldwide.

With a cumulative five-year forecast market of more than $67 Billion (globally), Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for Counter-Insurgency missions have become one of the fastest growing, most promising technology markets in the world.

The need to cope with multiple internal and external insurgencies, from Afghanistan to Nigeria, from China to Columbia, from India to the Philippines – creates a need for practical, if unconventional approaches. Growth is driven by the fast pace of development in the platform, payload and training sectors as the UAV market adapts to provide operational solutions for super-complex problems such as Counter IED threat mitigation.

But competing successfully in the Counter-Insurgency UAV market is not going to be easy. Bringing together the winning combination of technologies, strategies and price will require an in-depth understanding of multi-faceted market topology.

This new report is the only available research that analyzes the complexities involved with UAVs for Counter-Insurgency – Technologies, Tactics, Operating Concepts, Maintenance, Business Opportunities and pitfalls to avoid.

This unique report provides you with the data you need to understand the evolution of this unique market. It does so by combining the background and essential qualitative elements that make the picture “come alive” with realistic perspectives based on decades of experience of first-line practitioners.
