Virtual private clouds: a very public/private affair
Ovum, July 2010, Pages: 27
Virtual private cloud (VPC) services should be seen as an extension to existing managed hosting services. While different varieties of cloud services, including software-as-a-service (SaaS) and platform-as-a-service (PaaS), can be included under the VPC banner, this report will focus on the infrastructure services currently being marketed by a number of global telecoms operators and by managed hosting providers. This is where the network operators in particular want to chip away at the IT services market. It’s also the area that’s closest to the traditional infrastructure outsourcers, representing a halfway house between private cloud and public infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) offerings such as Amazon Web Services (AWS). VPC promises the commoditization and lower costs of the public cloud with the robustness and security of managed hosting. As such, it represents a mid-market delivery option for noncritical workloads.
