Industry press has widely publicized American Airlines' plans to change its distribution processes as it embraces the sale of ancillary products and services. Today, almost all the major airlines (with the notable exceptions of low-cost carriers such as Southwest Airlines) use the Airline Tariff Publishing Company (ATPCO) to distribute airfares, rules, and conditions of service to intermediaries such as global distribution systems (GDSs) and other fare processors like ITA Software.

These intermediaries and fare processors support travel points of sale by providing searches for various combinations of fares, routes, dates of travel, and rules. American Airlines has announced plans to stop distributing its fares and rules to intermediaries and fare processors, and instead to process all queries through the American Airlines (AA) airline reservation system.
