Bandwidth Effects of VPN Tunnels on VoIP Traffic

While network managers may find VPNs to be the tool of choice to secure their voice traffic, they are likely to pay a bandwidth penalty for that security. For example, the IP Security (IPSec) protocol, commonly employed by VPN gateway appliances, builds a complete VPN packet by encrypting the entire voice packet (both header and payload) and then tacking on additional, required header data. This new header, consisting of an unencrypted IP header and an Encapsulating Security Payload (ESP) header is, in essence, a penalty that consumes additional bandwidth when compared to the original voice packet. This, in turn, lowers the call capacity for a given size wide-area network pipe.
The specific challenge addressed in this issue is to quantify the bandwidth consumed by packet voice routed across an IPSec VPN tunnel. This data provides IT managers with the means to better estimate the bandwidth requirements for Vpn-secured VoIP.
This issue focused on Perceptual Speech Quality Measure (Psqm), Estimated Mean Opinion Score (MOS), latency and packet loss. Primary net production was completed using AltiGen Communications, Inc., Altiserv PBX with built-in H.323 Gateway, AltiWare OE (version 2.5), NetScreen, NetScreen-100 Internet Security Appliances, Agilent Technologies, Voice Quality Tester and an Agilent Technologies, Internet Advisor. Key infrastructure elements consisted of standard Ethernet/Fast Ethernet switch environment using two Marconi ES1200 stackable switches and an emulated T1 using Shunra Software’s “The Cloud”, Version 2.1.
