Czech Republic Telecommunications Report Q4 2010
Business Monitor International, Aug 2010, Pages: 98
The Czech Republic Telecommunications Report provides industry professionals and strategists, corporate analysts, telecommunication associations, government departments and regulatory bodies with independent forecasts and competitive intelligence on the Czech Republic's telecommunications industry.
Our update of the Czech Republic’s telecommunications market includes latest operational and financial data published by the country’s leading network operators; they include Telefónica O2 Czech Republic, which is the country’s fixed-line incumbent and largest mobile operator and in which Spain’s Telefónica has a controlling interest. They also include the second- and third-ranked cellcos, T-Mobile Czech Republic, which is backed by Germany’s Deutsche Telekom, and Vodafone Czech Republic of the UK’s Vodafone Group. The smallest operator is U:fon. There were an estimated total of 13.54mn mobile subscribers in the Czech market at the end of March 2010.
During the first half of 2010, the three largest operators were heavily involved in 3G network investments in an effort to attract high-value customers through postpaid contracts. In June 2010, Vodafone launched its 3G/HSPA network in a third city, Karlovy Vary. The operator also expanded its coverage to the airport. Since March 2010, Vodofone has been providing coverage in the cities of Brno and parts of Prague, but has not yet released subscriber data. The network supports peak download speeds of up to 7.2Mbps and upload speeds of up to 2Mbps. It is planning to expand 3G network coverage to 30-40 cities in the next 12 months. In the same month, T-Mobile announced plans to enhance its 3G network coverage to 30 towns across the country in summer 2010. This includes providing services to parts of Brno and Plzen by the end of June 2010 as well as offering data speeds of up to 21Mbps. The operator recently upgraded its GSM network, which is aimed at providing higher quality connection, better coverage in problematic areas and much higher transmission speeds. The upgrade includes replacement of 4,514 base stations and 112 controllers. Meanwhile, Telefónica O2 has already been providing 3G services, and is the most developed of the three leading operators.
3G arrived in the Czech Republic relatively late. Operators paid up to CZK3.9bn for spectrum licences and faced huge deployment costs. This was a huge investment for operators in a market with a relatively small population and very high mobile penetration. By the end of 2009, BMI estimates that the percentage of mobile subscribers with 3G price plans was just 3.4%, which is very low considering the first 3G services were launched in 2005.
If operators are able to invest rapidly in deploying 3G networks, improve data services and applications and increase 3G compatible handsets, then we can expect the 3G market to grow rapidly over the next five years. For now, however, we have maintained a conservative estimate of 599,000 3G subscribers as of 2010, but rising rapidly to 1.947mn to to the end of 2014.
