Market Overview
Future Prospects for the Asia Pacific Video Conferencing Endpoints Markets Bright although Performance was sub-par in 2009
The Asia Pacific video conferencing endpoints markets reached $335.5 million in 2009, at a modest growth of 5.4 percent compared to the preceding year. During 2009, the video conferencing endpoints market had remained active despite the global recession. There were new products launches from both emerging and established vendors that broadened the base of customers that could use video conferencing, triggering a spurt in adoption. The high definition (HD) endpoints markets in Asia Pacific witnessed a flurry of activity, with the continued penetration of popular solutions from leading vendors. The attractive price points offered by these vendors ensured a rapid increase in HD penetration in markets such as Malaysia, Philippines, and Thailand. 'Although a demand upswing for endpoint solutions was witnessed in most markets in the region, there was reluctance in signing high value deals, owing to the lackluster economic environment,' notes the analyst of this research service. 'A gradual easing of the uncertain atmosphere is expected during the short term, assuming that economic recovery for most markets in the Asia Pacific will proceed without any undue hindrance.'
Video endpoints growth dropped sharply in the wake of the global economic slowdown, affecting the spending ability of many multinational enterprises. In addition, many local enterprises suffered short cash-flows which depressed demand. However, the market seems to have picked up since then and the final quarter of 2009 and 2010 so far has seen optimistic growth. Growth in the market is expected to remain strong for the next 5-7 years. Expensive endpoints, slow internal IT networks, and expensive bandwidth were some of the major reasons for the declining demand. 'While the recession seems to be easing off, the issue of expensive bandwidth remains – especially for smaller enterprises in emerging countries,' says the analyst. 'With video collaboration for business to business communication catching on, enterprises that have or are in the process of rolling out transnational private IP networks should keep future applications such as video in mind for their network upgrades.' In terms of availability, reliability, and cost of bandwidth, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries vary considerably. While IP systems achieved a high level of penetration in urban locations in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Bangkok, some dual mode systems were still being sold for backup purposes. With awareness of these technologies rising and bandwidth costs declining at a steady pace, pure IP systems are poised for huge uptake during the mid to long term.
Considering the overall situation, vendors are focusing on unleashing affordable endpoint solutions. This will likely boost uptake of these solutions, more in terms of units rather than revenues. Enterprises with experience of legacy video endpoints should be educated through marketing campaigns in the form of white papers and online videos, as well as private demonstrations of the sea change in features and user experience that new generation HD endpoints can provide. These strategies will help allay end user apprehensions. The demand for video conferencing is very promising, especially in the entry level segment. However their needs and challenges may be different compared to large corporate customers.
