Frost & Sullivan, Dec 2009, Pages: 87
The research service provides a high level analysis of the South African low voltage circuit breakers market, focusing on three broad product markets; miniature circuit breakers (MCBs), molded case circuit breakers (MCCBs) and air circuit breakers (ACBs). The base year for the study is 2008, and forecasts for the market are provided from 2007 to 2015. The study also discusses industry challenges, drivers, restraints, and concludes with an end user opportunity analysis.
This Frost & Sullivan research service titled South African Low Voltage Circuit Breakers Market provides a detailed analysis of the low voltage circuit breaker demand patterns across South Africa. In this research, Frost & Sullivan's expert analysts thoroughly examine the following products: air circuit breakers, miniature circuit breakers, and moulded case circuit breakers. The end users covered in this research are metals, minerals and mining; chemicals and petrochemicals; power generation; water and wastewater; food and beverages; pulp and paper; automotive; pharmaceuticals and construction.
Market Overview
Investment to Expand Existing Energy Infrastructure Boosts the South African Low Voltage Circuit Breakers Market
Increased investments in the metals, minerals and mining, construction and power generation industries has spurred growth in the South African low voltage circuit breakers market since 2006. Although the global financial crisis largely affected demand within a few key end-user sectors in 2008 and 2009, the low voltage circuit breakers market is expected to witness strong and steady growth. “South Africa’s power utility, ESKOM’s investment in expanding existing energy infrastructure is a factor that is likely to boost the demand for circuit breaker products in the long-term,” says the analyst of this research. “ESKOM proposes to invest an estimated $385 billion, which will play a pivotal role in raising the demand for circuit breakers during the forecast period.” ESKOM is eager to raise funds by increasing electricity tariffs by 25 per cent per annum from 2010 to 2012, to ensure the implementation of its capital expansion programme. This will contribute to a steady growth in demand for circuit breaker panels, particularly moulded case circuit breakers.
However, a decline in short-term investment in the metals, minerals and mining sector as well as the shelving and cancellation of projects in the construction industry, particularly the residential sector, has resulted in a fall in the demand for circuit breakers. “Expansion activity within most of the process industries has also been subdued, with purchases being restricted to strategic buys, further contributing to a decline in demand for circuit breaker products,” explains the analyst.
Despite these challenges, strong market growth continues to be anticipated in the mid- and long-term buoyed by the government’s proposal to increase the number of low-cost houses. “With an anticipated revival of the global economy in 2011, demand for circuit breakers is expected to steadily rise from 2011 to 2015, buoyed by investments in infrastructure expansion projects within the chemicals and petrochemicals, power generation, construction and water and waste water industries,” concludes the analyst.
