Frost & Sullivan, June 2010, Pages: 172
This research study covers in detail Japanese passenger vehicle safety system market. The study covers key research findings, total market for passenger vehicle safety system, regulatory analysis, individual safety system unit shipment and revenue trend and forecast analysis, individual safety system price trend and forecast analysis, individual safety system vehicle manufacturer penetration rate trend and forecast analysis, individual safety system vehicle segment penetration rate trend and forecast analysis, profiles of key market participants in Japanese passenger vehicle safety system market, strategic analysis and conclusion, and future outlook and opportunities.
This Frost & Sullivan research service titled Strategic Analysis of Japanese Passenger Vehicle Safety System provides overview of the market shares, drivers, restraints, industry challenges, market size and forecasts, regulatory analysis, competitive analysis. In this research, Frost & Sullivan's expert analysts thoroughly examine the following markets: active safety systems {anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic braking distribution (EBD), vehicle stability control (VSC), tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), blind spot detection (BSD), parking assist (PA), adaptive front lighting system (AFS), night-view system (NVS), adaptive cruise control (ACC), and pre-crash safety system (PCS)}; and passive safety systems {supplemental restraint system (SRS), front airbag (FA), SRS side airbag (SA), SRS curtain airbag (CA), SRS knee airbag (KA), seatbelt with pre-tensioner and force limiter, electronic locking retractor/automatic locking retractor, whiplash protection system (WPS), impact absorption body (IAB), pedestrian injury mitigation (PIM)}.
Active Safety Systems Catching up with Passive Ones in the Japanese Passenger Vehicle Safety Systems Market
Passive safety systems, with almost 100 percent adoption rates, offer far fewer opportunities than the vibrant active safety systems segment in the passenger vehicle safety systems market. Greater consumer awareness about the importance of vehicle safety is encouraging Japanese vehicle manufacturers (VMs) and suppliers to increasingly focus on developing and standardizing active safety systems rather than passive ones. “For instance, VSC, as an active safety system, is expected to be available across all segments to reduce accident rate due to sudden elusive maneuvers by drivers in emergency situations,” says the analyst of this research. “Further, VMs and suppliers are developing an advanced type of drive assist technology incorporating intelligent transport system (ITS), which is expected to help the Japanese government achieve its target of 5,000 or less traffic fatalities by the end of 2012.”
However, device sophistication comes with a heavy price tag, which often hinders mass adoption. The higher costs of active safety systems have put them out of reach of smaller and cheaper vehicles. Therefore, VMs are working on producing affordable and user-friendly systems so that consumers pick active systems over passive ones. Unlike in Europe and the Americas, Japan does not enforce the use of active safety systems such as VSC and TPMS. This fosters healthy competition among VMs, which, in turn, promotes product development of active systems. “Active safety systems use new technologies and more expensive parts such as sensors and radars, which ramps up their costs,” notes the analyst. “Developing low-cost sensors and radars and integration of systems will help to lower system costs and increase adoption rates.”
