This report examines in detail trends in the hospital market for central venous catheters (CVCs) by material (PUR; silicone) and by type (without/with subcutaneous cuff; Seldinger/other insertion techniques; single-lumen/multi-lumen...) over the period 2005-2009. This includes trends in overall market size in volume and value, and trends in market shares in volume. Market size by end-user segment is also provided. Consumption figures and real end-user prices are collected directly from hospitals, then analysed using linear regression. Analyses are performed for each category of establishment within the public and the private sectors separately.

Demand for central venous catheters (CVCs) has remained grossly unchanged in recent years at about 450,000 units of which 95 per cent were accounted for by polyurethane CVCs. There has been a major shift away from single-lumen catheters towards multi-lumen catheters. Currently, one-third of sales are represented by three-lumen CVCs.The bulk of demand for peadiatric CVCs is in the private sector. Arrow/Teleflex dominates the market, and the market share of this supplier has gradually increased over years. Plastimed/Prodimed ranks second, followed by Vygon. Other suppliers include B. Braun Medical, Smiths Medical, Codan, Hospira, BD (Becton Dickinson), Bard and Cair.
