European Lighting Control Systems Markets
Frost & Sullivan, Aug 2010, Pages: 105
The European lighting control systems market is seen as a growth market with strong growth opportunities in the coming years. It is a fragmented market hosting companies from various backgrounds including lighting companies, building automation manufacturers and lighting control specialists. Market participants range from established multinational conglomerates to small national manufacturers and suppliers. While M&A activity is only moderate, the market still holds plenty of opportunities for new entrants to participate in growth coming from an ever increasing need to reduce energy consumption, demand for integration of lighting controls into building automation systems, and long term opportunities linked to growth in the use of LEDs.
This research service titled European Lighting Control Systems Markets provides an overview of current and future trends in demand for lighting control systems solutions. In this research, Frost & Sullivan's expert analysts thoroughly examine eight key markets from public and private end-user verticals in eight key regions across Europe. Geographic analysis covers the following European countries/regions (all of which are analysed both individually and in total): Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Benelux (Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg), Scandinavia (Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland), Spain and Central and Eastern Europe (Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic). The following major customer segments are covered: residential, commercial, public indoor, public outdoor and industrial.
Focus on Energy Efficiency to Boost Popularity of Lighting Control Systems
For long seen as a costly add-on for decorative lighting, lighting control systems have become increasingly in demand for their energy saving features. Suppliers have been responding by promoting their products as essential tools to reduce electricity consumption. Besides, the continuing trend towards integration into building automation as well as opportunities linked to new lighting technologies will continue to maintain high attractiveness levels for participants from a variety of backgrounds.
“The trend towards energy efficiency has significantly cushioned the impact of low construction activity on the European lighting control systems market,” notes the analyst of this research. “With energy reduction targets getting ever more ambitious and electricity prices set to increase rather than fall, the importance of this driver is certain to continue.” Although EU and national directives do not specifically prescribe the use of lighting controls, they are important parts of the government climate protection act, stipulating energy reduction targets for buildings. In achieving those targets, lighting control systems can play a significant role, especially when equipped with motion detection and daylight sensors.
Participants to Focus on Simplicity and User-friendliness
While in 2010 the bleak construction outlook will continue to have an impact on the European lighting control systems market, the market is expected to bounce back to growth mode by 2011. All EU countries will see revenues return to pre-crisis levels by the end of 2016. The installation of lighting controls systems in a building remains an expensive decision in terms of capital investment. Moreover, the variety of systems and breadth of offerings in the market can cause confusion and scepticism among customers. “With the development of technology, the complexity of lighting controls has grown,” remarks the analyst. “The sophistication of systems on offer demands expertise from installers and facility managers.”
Consumers prefer open systems such as LON or KNX that allow lighting controls to be integrated into building automation systems (BAS). In the meantime, the standardised protocols for lighting (for example, DALI) support full functionality of lighting management while integrated into BAS. It allows coordination of all building automated features together, which is ultimately cheaper and more user-friendly for facilities managers. “Lighting control companies need to consider the move towards open protocols, which will give more clarity and compatibility to their products,” advises the analyst. “They also need to work on simplifying lighting control systems to make lighting management easier and more user-friendly.”
