Market Overview

Better Understanding of Diagnosis Paves the Way for Novel Treatments in the Hepatitis C Therapeutics Market in China

Sustained efforts to raise awareness of Hepatitis C have increased the number of diagnosed cases and expanded the pool of patients available for treatment. Most Hepatitis C cases in China come from injecting drug users and those who receive contaminated blood products. Prevalence of Hepatitis C is higher among injecting drug users in several southern provinces in China, while improper blood screening is more prevalent in the rural areas of the country. According to the Chinese Medical Association and Chinese Foundation for Hepatitis Prevention and Control (CFHPC), the number of people infected with Hepatitis C virus (HCV) in China is increasing. "Although there is a high diagnosis rate in China, only a paltry 10 percent of diagnosed patients pursue treatment because patient and physician awareness of the disease is still generally low," notes the analyst of this research service.

The debilitating side effects, frequent dosing, and lackluster efficacy of the existing HCV treatment lower compliance among patients, especially those afflicted with Genotype 1. The current treatment regimen of Pegylated Interferon and Ribavirin for Hepatitis C comes with strong side effects, such as lowered blood platelet count, depression, and hemolytic anemia, while also having a lowered efficacy in Genotype 1 patients. This has spurred the exploration of more effective treatments. "According to physicians, those afflicted with Hepatitis C Genotype 1 have a sustained viral response of 40-50 percent to current therapy," says the analyst. "With 70 percent of those diagnosed with Hepatitis C in China having the Genotype 1 strain, the current drug offerings are unable to capture a sizeable portion of the market." At present, no interferon-based drug for the treatment of Hepatitis C has been included in the National Reimbursement List in China. This situation is further worsened by the fact that approximately 40 percent of the urban population and 80 percent of the rural population are uninsured, indicating that they may not be able to afford costly treatment.

Awareness and diagnosis efforts have increased, although they have been mostly targeted toward urban areas, while most of the population is concentrated in the rural areas. The combination of these factors represent missed treatment opportunities and thus, market share. Companies must offer treatment options that expedite efficiency, have fewer side effects, and are cost efficient. Public and private organizations, including pharmaceutical companies, must participate in disease awareness for Hepatitis C. Campaigns are needed to raise awareness of the virus and how infection can be prevented, diagnosed, and treated. Information on the current treatments available will enable patients to understand the nuances of the disease and be more receptive toward such treatment methods. Refined versions of current HCV drugs, oral formulations of small molecule inhibitors, and the new drug class known as protease inhibitors are in the development pipeline and represent the future of HCV treatment. New treatment options must be launched to capture this growing market.
