Rising Number of Diabetics in Malaysia Prompts the Government to Take Remedial Action
According to the International Diabetes Federation, there were a staggering 185.5 million diabetics globally in 2009, with Asia Pacific accounting for 76.5 million of them. Out of this, Malaysia contributed 1.33 million diabetics, of which only 0.6 million were diagnosed. While the diagnosed population presents a sizeable market for continuous blood glucose monitoring systems, the considerable untapped potential of the market cannot be ignored. The health authorities in Malaysia, in a nod to the large percentage of untreated population, have made it their priority to improve diabetes management and prevent diabetes-related complications.
As the awareness of diabetes is significantly low, especially in rural areas, it is challenging to promote self-monitoring among patients as part of the diabetes management project. However, the government is making a strong effort to raise awareness among the citizens by launching campaigns such as ‘Protect Your Kidney - Control Diabetes’ and ‘Malaysia Brings Diabetes to Light’. “One of the initiatives by the health ministry to improve the management and control of diabetes is the introduction of blood glucose (HbA1c) testing and the use of diabetes card for continuous monitoring,” says the analyst of this research. “This is expected to give a substantial boost to the market.”
The rise in the incidence of chronic diseases in the country can be largely attributed to the rapid changes in lifestyle, particularly within the growing mid- to high-income level groups. This scenario indicates a significant market opportunity for consumer healthcare goods such as SMBG products. “With the help of SMBG meters and strips, patients can monitor and manage the disease more effectively than in the past,” notes the analyst. “SMBG meters and strips are increasingly becoming an integral part of diabetes management in the whole of Asia Pacific.”
