Market Overview
Chinese Self-monitoring of Blood Glucose Devices and Strips Market Gains Traction with the Expanding Base of Diabetes Patients
In 2009, as 92.4 million people were afflicted with diabetes in China, the self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) devices and strips market experienced a demand upswing. The number of diabetes cases is expected to increase to half a billion by 2030, and healthcare expenditure on diabetes is likely to rise subsequently. However, with such a large population, it is invariably difficult to promote self-monitoring as part of diabetes management. The prevalence and incidence rates for diabetes or impaired glucose regulation (IGR) have increased dramatically over the last decades. In 2007, the total market for SMBG products was valued at $113.3 million, while 2008 recorded $125.7 million and 2009 witnessed revenues of $145.2 million. The Chinese SMBG devices and strips market grew at a rate of approximately 10-20 percent annually. Substantial increase in diabetes affected those between 45 and 54 years, which are considered the most productive working years. 'An alarming trend in China is the onset of type 2 diabetes at a comparatively young age,' notes the analyst of this research service. 'There is an urgent need to establish a national education program in China to encourage regular and community and clinic based diabetes screening for early detection of diabetes and IGR.' Screening those in the 20-39 age group must be emphasized in the future.
According to the International Diabetes Federation, there were a staggering 185.5 million diabetic patients in 2009 globally. Asia Pacific was considered the worst hit, with 76.5 million affected by this chronic disease. China’s diabetes prevalence rate in 2009 was 6.87 percent, with undiagnosed rate of 60.7 percent. Spread of the disease is attributed to rapid changes in lifestyle, particularly within the increasing mid- to high-income level groups. With the incidence of diabetes on the rise, SMBG meters and strips have become an integral part of diabetes management in Asia Pacific. 'Hospitals have traditionally been the major consumers of blood glucose strips for point-of-care testing followed by general practitioners (GPs) and clinics; however, sales of blood glucose meters (BGM) and strips, required for self-monitoring, through retail have burgeoned in the last five years,' says the analyst. 'In fact, their sales have become an important revenue stream for BGM manufacturers.'
Intensifying competition in this space has exerted pressure on price and affected market penetration. Another factor restraining growth is the introduction of new biosensor technology, which has replaced strips usage. Efforts undertaken by the Government to raise the level of awareness about diabetes has encouraged self-monitoring for better blood sugar control. However, awareness in rural and sub-urban areas remains low. Going forward, efforts must be directed toward spreading awareness in rural areas to effectively control the spread of the disease as well as uplift prospects for the SMBG devices and strips market.
