Market Overview
64-slice Systems as Dedicated Cardiac Systems Boost Growth in the Western and Eastern European Markets for Computed Tomography
CT is a diagnostic procedure that uses special x-ray equipment to obtain cross-sectional pictures of the body. The introduction of the 16-slice CT system in 2002 has made radiologists and cardiologists explore the potential of cardiac CT – the primary driver for the sales of 64-slice systems. Cardiac CT has almost revived the European CT market, with hospitals buying 64-slice CT systems as dedicated cardiac systems. The impact of cardiac CT has also been felt across the medical community with computed tomography angiography (CTA), which is replacing traditional angiograms at an astonishing speed. “The need to enhance the quality of diagnosis of coronary CTA is also driving the introduction of 128, 256 and 320 slice CT scanners, whose primary focus area will be the imaging of the heart in a single heartbeat,” says the analyst of this research. Currently, there is price-based competition in Europe, as every industry participant has introduced a scanner in each segment that can be differentiated solely based on the software for the systems. The introduction of higher-slice CT systems is occurring almost annually for the past few years, shortening the innovation cycles and resulting in customers adopting the 'wait and watch' approach instead of purchasing the presently available high-end system.
However, budgetary constraints are a common restraint for most private practitioners, who prefer to purchase refurbished systems for their clinics. This restraint is mostly applicable to echocardiography. “The current cost-cutting spree has impelled several small hospitals and clinics, local vendors and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to purchase equipment such as cardiac CT from large university hospitals and refurbish them,” explains the analyst.
Vendors should focus on convincing hospitals to replace their existing equipment with modern ones. Additionally, companies should think of interesting offers for the exchange of existing 16-slice CT systems or lower-slice configuration systems with 64-slice units. “With the existing budget scenario in European hospitals, the bargaining power of suppliers is already low,” concludes the analyst. “However, with the implementation of such high-value offerings, companies are expected to achieve volume sales of their cardiac CT products.”
