In June 2010, Alcatel-Lucent announced that it had been selected to supply AU$70 million (US$64 million) worth of GPON and Ethernet aggregation equipment to the Australian NBN (National Broadband Network). The AU$43 billion (US$39 billion) build, which had entered a holding pattern due to the withdrawal of political support, now has the support needed to continue. The objective of the NBN is to provide 100Mbps FTTH broadband to 93% of the nation and to boost the nation’s digital economy by creating a platform for new public and private services, such as e-health and smart utility grids.
