Increased competition among mobile players in India has made it vital for operators to sharpen their focus on core operations so that they can defend and improve their market position. Originally envisaged as an idea to decrease the time taken for site rollout, the concept of network sharing is today at the top of the cost-cutting agenda of many operators as they battle declining margins. The need for faster returns on operator investments in 3G and broadband wireless access (BWA) networks, combined with increased demand from operators to provision for in-building coverage, will further strengthen the business case for passive infrastructure sharing.
