The 3rd Edition of Research Reports International's Utility Use of Biomass report is a 50-page overview of the ways in which utilities are going about adding biomass-fueled generation to their electric resource portfolios.

Renewable portfolio standards, the threat of carbon reduction mandates, and customer desire for more environmentally sound energy sources are all driving utilities to take a hard look at using renewable energy to meet their electric supply requirements. While both wind and solar power have been growing rapidly, suitable resources do not exist in all locales and costs for solar power are extremely high. However, biomass resources are widely available and in many cases can be used cost-effectively to generate electricity.

The report provides a thorough understanding of the methods being used to increase the amount of biomass in utility electric resource portfolios. A major objective of this report is to provide the information necessary for industry participants to start thinking about how biomass can play a role in their own portfolios. The report aims to provide the reader with a thorough understanding of what biomass is, the potential of biomass-fueled generation, and how utilities are currently using biomass.

The report does this by providing an overview of biomass as a fuel for power generation, including what it is, how it is produced, and how much is currently consumed. The report then shifts to an exploration of what business drivers are encouraging the development of biomass. Next the report examines the barriers that stand in the way of expanding the use of biomass, as well as how they can be reduced.

The report then moves into a discussion of the different feedstocks available for use in biomass, as well as the different technologies that exist for generating power from biomass. The report then shifts to an evaluation of the economics of biomass-fueled generation.

Finally, the report identifies the different methods utilities are using to add biomass-fueled generation to their supply portfolios. These include owning their own plants, signing long-term PPAs for biomass-derived electricity, purchasing biogas to fuel gas-fired plants, and producing feedstocks. Specific examples of utility use of each of these methods are provided.
