Highlights:

After a period of steadily increasing growth, the global multi utilities sector fell into decline in 2009. Further declines are not expected in the forecast period (2009-14) and the sector is set to post increasing growth rates again towards 2014. In 2009, the 50 biggest multi utility companies generated total revenues of $660.8 billion, representing a CAGR of 7.4% for the period spanning 2005-09. The US and European regions dominated the global multi-utilities sector in 2009, capturing a collective share of 97.9% of the global sector’s value.

The top 10 global multi-utility companies have witnessed a robust revenue growth during 2007-09. Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) recorded the highest revenue growth at a CAGR of 46%. This significant increase in revenue is due to the rise in the output of renewable energy delivered by the company, following the integration of Airtricity acquired in 2008, as well as the completion of new renewable energy developments. SSE achieved a net gain of 600,000 energy supply customer accounts in FY2009, increasing its total customer accounts to 9.05 million.

The performance of the global multi-utilities sector is forecast to accelerate slightly, with an anticipated CAGR of 7.9% for the five-year period 2009-14, which is expected to drive the sector to a value of $966.1 billion by the end of 2014.
