Russia Shipping Report Q4 2010
Business Monitor International, Sep 2010, Pages: 97
Renowned as an oil and gas exporter, Russia's energy-producer status somewhat overshadows the nation's wealth of other raw materials. The country has massive reserves of coal, is developing into a major grain producer and also boasts iron ore deposits, making Russia a market of great interest in the dry bulk shipping sphere. Russia Dry Bulk Shipping Key Views the country's access to a large number of seaboards offers Russia the ability to trade easily with both Asia and Europe. Mining firms' investment and government funding should help the much-needed upgrade of Russia's coal export terminals.
Russia's plans to become the world's number one exporter of wheat will be reliant on the country's ports developing to meet the agribusiness sector's logistical needs. Further development of transporting grain by container could open up more port possibilities for Russia's grain exports.
Russia's growing exports of grain, coal and dry bulk will expose the country to the volatile dry bulk market. Compared with the boom year of 2009, when Chinese demand was high, demand has slowed in 2010 and overcapacity has been a threat. Global Dry Bulk Shipping Key Views 'China effect' in reverse, causing demand for shipping to fall.
- Supply-demand imbalance to widen, with excess supply. - Thermal coal demand offers some support, but no panacea. - Vertical integration of mining firms a discomfort to dry bulkers. The effect of the dry bulk shipping slowdown on Russia is highlighted by throughput at the country's largest port, the port of Novorossiysk, in H110. The port caters mainly for dry and liquid bulk, and in H110 dry bulk volumes through the facility dropped by 5.4% y-o-y, a major factor being the plummet in iron ore throughput, which fell by 63.9% y-o-y. The authors fear further downside risk to Russia's dry bulk throughput for 2010, especially for those ports exposed to grain exports following the government's grain export ban, which came into effect in August 2010.
