American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) - Reviving the US Geothermal Industry
Summary
The US is the market leader in the geothermal industry in terms of installed capacity. Currently, nine states produce geothermal power in the country with an installed capacity of around 3,153 MW. However, geothermal contributed around 2% to the country’s energy mix in the year 2009. Concentration of federal policies and state incentives in few states are the key drivers of the industry growth in the past few years. With the introduction of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) 2009 adequate funds paid out to the development of this sector boosted its growth in the country As on April 2010, around 152 geothermal power projects are in various stages of development and will add around 7,057 MW of geothermal installed capacity to the country power grid.
