This document is a must have for everybody in the jatropha business. Much cash flow can be generated from seedcakes, in some cases even exceeding those from biofuels. It is a thorough research on all aspects, unveiling all unclarities and aspects one needs to know for the anaerobic digestion of jatropha seedcake.

Summary

Anaerobic digestion of jatropha seedcake and generating energy from biogas is proving to be a profitable and sustainable option. The seedcake shows reasonable biogas yields and is often abundantly available at low cost. The return from biogas can in some cases be much higher than the income from the biofuel produced from jatropha. Also in several concerns about jatropha like the food versus fuel debate, water footprint and soil organic carbon it alleviates several aspects. It reduces GHG emission and it concentrates, gathers and increases the amount of fertiliser as digestate which can also be used for food production. Anaerobic digestion of jatropha seedcake seems a good addition to the plantations in any case.

Setting up a digester and a generator can be an interesting investment opportunity with an estimated internal rate of return between 6% and 138%. The return strongly depends on the price per kWh in a region (€0.05 - €0.20/kWh) and the type and size of digester and generator. Between 1,000 and 1,500 hectares of jatropha is needed for a 2 MW installation, calculated on the basis of an average yield per hectare and the calculated biogas yield per kilogram seedcake.
