Global Market Review of Truck Manufacturing – Forecasts to 2014
just-auto, Oct 2010, Pages: 106
This report is the third in a series published on the global truck (6+ tonnes) industry. The last report was published in 2007, since then the world’s economy and ultimately the truck industry has been through the severest downturn for more than half a century. As Volvo Group acknowledges in rather Churchillean tones: “Never before in the Group’s history had so many markets simultaneously been so severely affected by the downturn.”
In the past few years we have seen the industry consolidate and adjust its manufacturing footprint on a global scale to bring it more into line with reduced demand levels around the world.
Industry consolidation has seen the large automotive groups bringing together truck brands in an effort to gain economies of scale and spread the R&D costs associated with new model development.
Looking ahead, environmental concerns will impact on all aspects of the industry and ‘well to wheel’ considerations will act as one of the main industry drivers. Vehicle design will increasingly reflect many of the changes that we see emerging now, alternative drive trains, the quest for more environmentally-friendly fuels, changes in freight transportation patterns and the distribution of goods and services combined with legislation will all influence the way the market develops.
This report will provide an up-to-date global review of the truck manufacturing industry, offering anyone involved in the business a thorough understanding of where the industry is heading and which companies will be winning.
Starting with a global overview, the report profiles the key manufacturers, providing their sales and production volumes and forecasting these out to 2014 (year-on-year). Future prospects are considered for each truck maker.
The major world markets are profiled, with trended sales units forecast out to 2014 for each region.
Technology, innovation and legislation are all analysed, with latest emission legislation discussed by market. Other topics discussed include selective catalytic reduction (SCR), EGR, fuel economy, powertrain developments and optimised transmission systems. Particular attention is paid to alternative drivetrain development including hybrids, biodiesel and ethanol.
