Illustrated Dictionary of Cargo Handling gives readers a visual idea of all elements of maritime transport which relate to the handling and movement of cargo. This is particularly for the benefit of shore-based personnel who often do not get the opportunity to see at first-hand how the cargoes they are working on are handled and moved.

The book covers

- Ship types and the parts of ships relating to the handling and stowage of cargo
- The cargoes themselves (including many bulk cargoes and heavy lifts)
- Dedicated terminals and their equipment and accessories
- Cranes
- Container-types
- Port equipment, such as fork-lift trucks and accessories
- Other handling equipment

There are about 800 terms and definitions, including over 200 new or expanded terms since the 2nd edition, all listed in alphabetical order. There are over 150 illustrations, nearly double the previous edition. Also, in many cases, an expanded caption which provides an explanation of the particular object in the photo which may be one example in a range of equipment. Captions also provide information on anything else relevant in the photo, where, for example, the term being illustrated has been photographed surrounded by other equipment. Illustrations are positioned as close to the main term which they are illustrating, and are numbered fig. 1 and up to make them easy to find where several terms are covered by the same illustration.

The book is intended to provide readers with explanations and images relating to the visual elements of cargo handling, so as to provide them with an understanding of the types of ships and equipment that may be required when handling and moving different types of cargo.

EXAMPLE DEFINITIONS:

TELESCOPIC SPREADER
Device usually made of steel, which is attached to a crane for handling shipping containers. It is one of a variety of spreader beams used for handling containers, all of which are solid pieces of equipment that fit onto the corner castings of the container. The telescopic version is capable of manual or automatic adjustment to fit the container.

UNLOADER
Term used to define port apparatus employed to unload ships carrying dry bulk cargoes. This equipment may take the form of a crane with a grab attached or pneumatic suction apparatus used typically for grain. Unloaders are normally associated with a high rate of discharge. Unloaders may be fixed or mobile, the latter being slower but allowing flexibility at terminals and ports by being capable of being moved wherever required.
