Clinical Diagnostics Industry in East Africa

Description:
This study covers three countries in East Africa: Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and their clinical diagnostics industry. Market, examining drivers and restraints for growth, pricing, distribution, technology, legislation, demand and geographical trends. Following from these, market growth for regional and market segments are forecast. In addition, an in-depth analysis of the competitive situation including vendors' market shares is performed. The base year is 2009 with forecasts running through 2016. The market is further divided into sub segments: Clinical Chemistry, Immunodiagnostics, Haematology, Molecular diagnostics, Cancer diagnostics and Point-of-Care.

This research service titled Clinical Diagnostics Industry in East Africa provides a healthcare overview of the key countries in the East African region. It complements the findings by highlighting key statistics and external variables that will assist clinical diagnostics manufacturers and suppliers in market entry or expansion. In this research, Frost & Sullivan's expert analysts thoroughly examine the following markets: clinical chemistry, immunodiagnostics, haematology, cancer diagnostics, molecular diagnostics and point of care.

Market Overview

Expansion of Disease Screening Methods and Increase in Treatment Sites Impel the Clinical Diagnostics Market

The escalating prevalence of diseases in East Africa has compelled governments and healthcare workers to focus on disease prevention rather than treatment, creating a vast market for clinical diagnostics. Accurate testing is needed for the early identification and mapping of diseases to control their spread and reduce treatment costs. East African countries are already on the World Health Organisation’s (WHO’s) list of 22 high-burden infectious disease-affected countries. According to the WHO, Africa accounts for 90 per cent of child mortality due to malaria and AIDS, and 50 per cent of all child mortality due to diarrhoeal disease and pneumonia. In addition, the continent has a quarter of the world's disease burden but only 3.0 percent of its healthcare workers, restricting the delivery of healthcare services. “It lacks skilled and trained laboratory personnel due to the low-quality of education and training imparted,” says the analyst of this research. “Further, the trained staff is lured away by countries that pay higher salaries for the same responsibility.” Equipment donations by companies, while laudable, does not provide the necessary training and limits product uptake in the clinical diagnostics industry.

Owing to this paucity of skilled personnel, there is considerable demand for high-quality, cost-effective and automated products. A rise in the number of communicable and non-communicable diseases in the region will further drive growth within the clinical diagnostics industry. Education and awareness will also increase the uptake of diagnostic tools. “Investments and funding in East African countries are increasing, as investors are beginning to realise its market potential,” notes the analyst. “Economic improvements allow the countries in the region to build superior infrastructure and invest more money in their people and the general betterment of life, which, in turn, will enhance healthcare delivery and services.”
