Frost & Sullivan, Aug 2010, Pages: 122
This Frost & Sullivan research service titled Asia Pacific Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Market an in-depth analysis of the market drivers and restraints, industry trends, and competitive environment in addition to the challenges and issues faced by market participants. The study provides an analysis of the size of the key AMI markets in Asia Pacific in terms of revenues and unit shipment.
Market Overview
Government Incentives Enable Forward Momentum for the Asia Pacific Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Market
The commitment to a sustainable environment and the need to revamp the operational efficiency of the obsolete power grid are factors spearheading growth in the Asia Pacific AMI market. Utilities across the region are analyzing the business case for smart meters and have either already deployed advanced metering installations or have it as a key agenda in the near future. As the business case for AMI becomes more evident, utilities are expected to proactively embrace the technology. Government support for smart meters and smart grids is a major factor revving up prospects for the AMI market in the region. The market has received a major boost with government mandates supporting the installation of smart meters. “Australia has seen the biggest increase in the AMI market in the Asia Pacific,” notes the analyst of this research service. “The state of Victoria has made it mandatory for all power companies to install smart meters at all consumer sites by 2013.”
Although the prospects for the market look upbeat, some impediments are preventing forward momentum. The communication network infrastructure is under threat from hackers and viruses. Most network systems are protected with some form of data encryption, however, with the evolution of the AMI industry, newer threats have sprung up. Security standards need to be expressly developed to address these issues. With AMI technology evolving at a rapid pace, utilities are wary of adopting technologies that run the risk of becoming obsolete within a short period. Moreover, aging grid infrastructure and workforce must be upgraded to keep abreast of changing technology. Aside from this, high installation costs are detracting from the benefits of AMI technology. At present, the entire cost is being passed on to the customers. In Taiwan, however, it is difficult for the power company to pass on the cost of meters to the consumers. To bring down high infrastructure costs, governments in the region are providing incentives to help companies circumvent this obstacle.
“Most of the challenges facing the AMI market revolve around the evaluation of the business case for AMI,” says the analyst. “Pilot projects and test beds across the region are trying to validate the business case and the market is expected to see a more commercial scale growth as the business case for AMI appears more strongly.” To ensure market progression, efforts must be stepped up to enhance awareness of the technology among customers.
