Four years after an ill-fated initial introduction Hybrid Disk Drives, the combination of a standard hard disk drive and a small NAND array, are making a resurgence. No longer hampered by troubles stemming from operating system malfunctions the new rendition of this technology promises to sweep the PC hard drive market This hybrid disk drive study explains the technology, defines its potential market, explores competing technologies, and explains the impact of this new twist on an old technology on the NAND, PC, and HDD markets

Key Findings:

- Modern hybrid HDDs have absorbed data management functions that were earlier promised in certain operating systems. This removes the new products’ dependence on external factors

- Numerous good alternatives to hybrid HDDs already exist, but the economics of hybrid HDDs are likely to make them win out over all of these technologies

- Forecasts for the hybrid HDD market to grow to 600 million units by 2016 to account for $34 billion in revenues

- Although hybrid HDD unit shipments will be a large share of overall HDD shipments, the NAND in these drives will amount to no more than 5% of the total NAND flash market in 2016

- Once hybrid drives, or some similar technology, find acceptance, expects to see these products sweep the market in only four years

- Although it is widely acknowledged that NAND belongs in the PC, there are differing views as to how and where it belongs. This will impact acceptance of hybrid HDD technology until consumers decide on a preferred solution

Hybrid Disk Drives, the marriage of a standard hard disk drive and NAND flash, were introduced in 2007 to an unreceptive market, so why are they making a resurgence today?

According to the new report: Are Hybrid Drives Finally Coming of Age, this technology was well conceived but poorly implemented in its first generation. Now that working versions have been implemented the hybrid drive promises to sweep the PC hard drive market.

'We expect the hybrid drive market to nearly double every year for the five years following its initial adoption, reaching 600 million units by 2016,' said the report's author Jim Handy. 'This blazing growth will result from hybrid drives replacing standard HDDs in mainstream PCs.'

The 54-page report is based upon the same methodology as other Objective Analysis studies, with projections derived from interviews with all levels of the supply chain, putting a special focus on prospective hybrid drive customers. The results of the survey are tempered by a solid understanding of computer architecture and data storage techniques. The study explains both what will become of this market and why it will develop the way that it will.

Hybrid Disk Drive study explains hybrid drive technical principals, the technology's potential market, competing technologies, and how the NAND, PC, SSD, and HDD markets will all be impacted by this new twist on an old technology. The report, Are Hybrid Drives Finally Coming of Age, tells why the technology failed in the past, and forecasts its anticipated growth.

Twenty figures graphically illustrate important concepts and forecasts, and five tables present detailed forecasts and other information.

This study is essential to any company participating in the SSD, HDD, or hybrid drive markets, either as a manufacturer, user, or investor in this technology. Readers will gain an understanding of all aspects of the Hybrid Drive market, and will learn strategies to participate in the market.
