Synopsis
Mobile broadband has taking off in 2011 with the mobile network operators rolling out 3G and 4G services while dedicated fixed-wireless operators such as BigAir, Unwired and vividwireless continuing to provide niche markets in major city areas.
Australia’s first 4G wireless broadband network was originally launched by the Seven Network’s wireless internet division – under the vividwireless name. In early 2012 vividwireless was being purchased by the SingTel Australian division of Optus for from Seven for $230 million, subject to the successful transfer of the company spectrum on approval from the FIRB, the ACCC and the ACMA.
The Australian wireless broadband market has grown 162% over the last year and vividwireless was aiming to tap into the mobile computing and broadband market in commercial premises and residences. In this report we provide an overview and analysis with statistics on Unwired and vividwireless.
The other major operator BigAir continues to make acquisitions into 2012 and is targeting communities such as students and tourist parks for its offerings.
