Market Overview
Mature North Asian Wireless Market Innovates Technologies to Stem Revenue Erosion
The North Asian wireless market is mature, in terms of mobile penetration rate, mobile data usage, and technology, and it is the biggest revenue generator in this region. However, the market maturity and intense competition have decelerated revenue growth and operators are lowering prices through tariff cutting, service bundling, and phone subsidizing to stay afloat. In Japan and South Korea, the most advanced markets in the region, revenues have even shown a negative growth rate. The mobile voice average revenue per user (ARPU) will continue to decline in Hong Kong as well, but in China and Taiwan, the revenues are expected to continue to increase, although at a slower rate. “The North Asian market comprises the high-growth Chinese market, the highly competitive Taiwanese and Hong Kong markets, and the highly saturated Japanese and South Korean markets,” says the analyst of this research. “To enhance their profitability, operators have to further segment their customers and tailor their service offerings to address the requirements of each segment and drive their technology needs.”
To tackle market maturity and its attendant issues, participants in the North Asian wireless markets have to resort to new technologies, higher operating efficiencies, and creative business models. CSL in Hong Kong announced that its LTE network was ready. Japanese operator NTT DoCoMo will launch long-term evolution (LTE), the 4G mobile technology, by end of 2010. Operators in South Korea, Taiwan and China are also actively testing the technology. “Mobile data will rise dramatically across all the five countries in North Asia and will continue to do so with the rising popularity of smart phones and other mobile data devices,” notes the analyst. In 2015, the mobile data contribution to the total ARPU is expected to be 34.5 percent in China, 31 percent in Hong Kong, 70 percent in Japan, 30 percent in South Korea, and 36 percent in Taiwan. The Chinese wireless market has the highest growth rate in this region, and is likely to reach a penetration rate of 76 percent in 2015.
