Market Overview

Rise in Unified Communications Promotes Adoption of Web Conferencing

As web conferencing technology matures and penetrates wider and deeper into organisations, end users will look to implement cost-efficient solutions that can be integrated with other software-based productivity applications. Constant innovation is driving the conferencing and collaboration market. Previously, conferencing services vendors concentrated mainly on convergence of communication solutions, yet with a shift in focus, increased integration of the market became the priority. “Currently, vendors are making progress in the integration of web conferencing with commonly used business applications and processes,” says the analyst of this research. “Considerable effort is being put on open platforms and third-party applications such as widgets and mashups.”

With the increase in functional needs for web conferencing, customers are expected to move to on-premise software deployments. While economics may be a big threat for hosted web conferencing services, a greater rationale for adoption of the on-premise software model is likely to emerge from the value of integration. The true value of web conferencing and other collaborative communications lies in their integration into a common platform where end users will relinquish the current way of using ‘multiple tools for multiple processes’ and adopt a unified communications product, of which conferencing and collaboration will be an essential element.

Understanding Local Nuances is the Key to Promote Uptake

Lack of seamless interoperability between several conferencing tools and existing enterprise communication applications limit the availability of truly unified solutions as well as ease of use, thus slowing adoption rates. “Additionally, the small medium business (SMB) segment, in general, remains under penetrated, restraining widespread adoption,” remarks the analyst. “This situation is, however, likely to change in the near future as the awareness of web conferencing services among the SMBs increases.”

Despite an increasing interest, the penetration level of web conferencing in Western Europe is low. The next few years pose numerous potential growth opportunities for larger economies in Western Europe to bring web conferencing to a position of maturity. North America, as opposed to Europe, is a homogenous market, and the technology adoption tends to happen faster. “Global conferencing participants first introduce their new web conferencing solution in the major European countries, where English is widely spoken, like the United Kingdom, Germany and the Nordic region, among others, and after achieving considerable success and adding on various other European language integrations, introduce the solution to other European countries,” advises the analyst. “It is important for global vendors to understand the need for strong localisation of their products, especially the need to provide support in local languages, as English is not a language which the workforce uses proficiently.”
