The European fire suppression systems market took a major hammering in 2009 as the recession and collapse of construction markets kicked in. The next few years will remain tough as construction remains depressed, although the underlying market drivers of fire and safety solutions remain strong and a return to growth is expected by 2012. This study provides a full analysis, as well as forecasts by suppression technology and country, and company market shares, drivers, restraints and challenges to the market

Market Overview

Gas-based and Foam-based Segments to Drive European Fire Suppression Systems Market

Gas-based and foam-based fire suppression systems will experience strong adoption by industrial and commercial end users, supporting the expansion of the European fire suppression systems market. These advanced systems are preferred, despite being expensive. Their rising adoption is often justified by building owners who stand to benefit; the cost of these suppression systems is outweighed by their usefulness in protecting expensive and difficult-to replace equipment and technology within buildings. “National and regional legislation is the strongest growth driver,” notes the analyst of this research. “It is mandatory for specified types of fire suppression systems to be installed in all new buildings.” This constitutes around half the total revenues for this market.”

New construction and retrofit applications provide a source of stable demand for fire suppression systems in buildings. However, this demand is reliant on various factors such as legislation, the type and purpose of the building, type of fire suppression mandated for the building and finally, the total cost of the installation. In the current scenario, the biggest restraints to market growth are the economic recession and the resultant low levels of new construction in Europe. The backlog of previous construction activity provided some ongoing demand for fire suppression systems in 2009. Nevertheless, the ability to afford these expensive systems reduced significantly during the economic downturn, leading building owners/tenants to postpone installing fire suppression systems in their retrofit/new buildings.

Experts Need to Convince End Users of Wide Ranging Benefits of Fire Suppression Systems

The greatest challenge for this market is the lack of pan-European fire regulations that would mandate the use of fire suppression systems in all buildings. Currently, only national level legislations are in place and these do not provide the necessary impetus for owners/tenants to follow the legislation. “The fact that still convinces owners/tenants to adopt at least some basic fire suppression safety systems in their buildings is the fear of the losing their expensive equipment and technologies in the event of a fire accident,” remarks the analyst. “This is the predominant reason for the greater market share of water-based systems in buildings. Nevertheless, since building types and purposes vary, these often quite basic water-based systems are not very effective in suppressing fire.”

The approach to overcoming this challenge would be educate end users on the benefit of each technology – whether water-, gas- or foam-based systems. The decision on purchasing a particular fire suppression system should not depend on its cost, but rather on the purpose and total worth of the building as well as on the equipment and technology installed in it. Often owners/tenants get swayed by budget limitations and end up installing a basic suppression system that cannot provide optimal protection in the event of a fire accident. “The use of experts and consultants with expertise in the range of fire suppression technologies available in the market would support the installation of the right type of suppression system in a building,” concludes the analyst. “Such experts should convince owners/ tenants that these are one-time investments which can offer considerable savings and effective protection.”
