HP Culminates a Proven Relationship with Acquisition of Fortify

On August 17, 2010, Hewlett Packard announced its intent to acquire Fortify Software, a leading vendor of static source code analysis technology for securing applications. Anticipated for some time, the acquisition culminates a longstanding partnership between HP and Fortify that complements HP’s Application Security Center, itself the product of HP’s acquisition of SPI Dynamics for dynamic security analysis and vulnerability assessment for deployed applications. Although SPI Dynamics was one of the first application security vendors to unite aspects of static and dynamic analysis within its portfolio, Fortify brought considerable depth in its primary focus on security in application development that enabled the partners to compete head-to-head with vendors in both static and dynamic analysis, as well as against major competitors such as IBM. The acquisition of Fortify now clarifies the future of unified static and dynamic analysis at HP.
In EMA’s view, it better levels the playing field for competition with IBM as well as with other leaders with less comprehensive assets across these two important domains, and more fully harmonizes HP’s Application Security Center assets with solutions across the application lifecycle, from development to quality assurance and operations management.
