On August 19, 2010, Intel Corporation announced that it had reached an agreement to acquire McAfee, Inc., a leading vendor of a wide portfolio of IT security products and services, for approximately $7.68 billion in cash. The deal has raised many eyebrows and aroused no little amount of criticism, considering the distance between where the companies are today from the vision of embedded and hardware-based security the two sought to articulate when the deal was announced. In the view of (EMA), Intel-McAfee have an opportunity to capitalize not only on the advancement of mobility and the increased pervasiveness of intelligence, but also on securing virtualization---both in the data center and on the endpoint—which would greatly benefit from hardware-level security.

Whether the relationship will ultimately succeed, however, depends greatly on realizing that vision, and the parties’ ability to respond to trends that may make legacy models of IT security obsolete. In this, the acquisition is a bellwether for the future of the IT security industry, as the changes in computing wrought by the new security models of mobile devices, and the impact of virtualization and the delivery of IT as a service, call into question the future of security leaders whose empires were built on models of the past. If Intel and McAfee are ultimately successful, they will seem visionary today. The deal itself, however, seems to highlight these uncertainties among security leaders, and may therefore not be the last such unexpected alignment.
