Olympus Corporation, headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, develops and manufactures products based on optical and electronic technology for the consumer, scientific, healthcare and industrial markets. The company operates within five divisions; Medical Systems, Imaging Systems, Life Science & Industrial, Information & Communication and Other. The main focus of this profile is Olympus Medical Systems, the Olympus group’s largest operating division, accounting for almost 40% of the company’s total turnover in the financial year ended 31st March 2010. The division is a leading manufacturer of gastro-intestinal (GI) endoscopes, surgical endoscopes, endotherapy devices, endoscopic ultrasound systems and related products.
The acquisition of Gyrus ACMI in February 2008 contributed a complementary range of visualisation and tissue management systems, instruments and services for minimally-invasive surgery to the Medical Systems division’s extensive portfolio. Another significant development for Olympus in the area of minimally-invasive devices was the June 2010 announcement of an agreement to acquire Spiration, a developer of devices for the treatment of acute and chronic conditions of the lungs. Whilst holding strong positions in the global endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) and flexible bronchoscopy market, the acquisition of Spiration will enable Olympus to focus on expanding efforts to address respiratory conditions not related to lung cancer.
Olympus Medical Systems sells its products throughout the world and has manufacturing facilities in Japan, the US, Germany, the UK, the Czech Republic and Vietnam. In fiscal 2010, the division generated operating income of ¥75.9 billion on net sales of ¥350.8 billion.
