The latest version of a special report “primer” that sorts out the latest developments in the exciting area of e-books and e-publishing. About the Present Report:
The purpose of this report is to provide a basic guide or primer on e-publishing technologies and what our outlook for the technology is. Are there any to pay attention to, any to ignore? What are the opportunities for graphic arts professionals in the area of e-publishing? What are the barriers? What are some pitfalls to watch out for?
As with all our “primer” series report, the present document is intended to get the reader up to speed on the issues and terminology, and lay the groundwork for further inquiry.
How This Report Is Organized:
Section 1 provides a detailed overview of the various e-book formats and devices.
Section 2 takes a look at the Apple iPad.
Section 3 provides a “debate” about the pros and cons of e-books vs. printed books in the form of a (vaguely) Platonic dialogue.
Section 4 provides overall conclusions, implications, general outlook, and advice for graphic communications segments regarding e-publishing.
Appendix A provides step-by-step (or blow-by-blow) accounts of the process of converting a print book created in Adobe InDesign to e-books compatible with the Amazon Kindle and the iPad.
Appendix B is the e-book graveyard, a collection of devices that have gone on to meet their reward, for the historically curious.
Appendix C provides provides a simplified table of players and products.
