Ethylene: Large Surge in Capacity May Lead To Oversupply
Summary
Ethylene is a raw material used in the manufacture of polymers such as polyethylene (PE), polyester, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polystyrene as well as fibers and other organic chemicals. These products are used in various industries like packaging, transportation, electrical, textile and construction. Global installed capacity of ethylene is 145 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA), while global demand of ethylene stands at 115 MMTPA in 2010. This has resulted in an excess capacity of more than 20%.
Thus an expected overcapacity situation is expected to occur for ethylene due to the large surge in capacity against a stagnant demand.
