Core Forecasts

Malaysia received 11.87mn visitors over H110, an increase of 4.6% year on year (y-o-y). This puts the country in a strong position at the half way mark for the year and we reiterate our forecast for 25.26mn visitors for the year as a whole (a rise of 7% y-o-y). Looking at trends so far in 2010, Singapore remains the key source of tourist visitors to Malaysia, with 6.29mn visitors, followed by Indonesia (1.25mn), Thailand (712,410), Brunei (578,636), China (including Hong Kong and Macau) (516,160) and India (359,461).

BMI remains bullish about the long-term prospects for Malaysian tourism, which continues to benefit from strong government support and a relatively secure and stable political situation. The country offers a range of tourism options, from meetings, incentives, conferences and events (MICE) travel to beach holidays, and the government is committed to supporting an industry that is an important generator of foreign exchange.

Boost For Health Tourism

In September 2010, it was announced that the US’ prestigious Johns Hopkins University will establish a joint venture (JV) with a Malaysian company to build a new US$582mn teaching hospital in the country, likely in Selangor state. According to a report on the Channel News Asia website, Health Minister Liow has said that the entry of Johns Hopkins would boost the Malaysian health tourism industry and could prompt Malaysian émigrés to return to the country of their birth.

Also in September, it was reported that the government has now relaxed guidelines on the advertising of private healthcare services, a move which is widely expected to boost the health tourism sector. Previously, such services could only be advertised in specialist magazines. However, now advertising will be allowed on TV, newspapers and the internet.

The government has previously stated that it would like to increase the number of ‘health tourists’ visiting Malaysia by some 20% per annum (from a 2009 level of 336,000). Sarawak Looking To Increase Tourist Arrivals

In September 2010, state news agency Bernama reported on Sarawak State’s drive to attract tourists to the region. The Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) has announced a series of travel roadshows and overseas marketing campaigns to tie in with the launch of new direct international flights to Kuching Airport by Malaysia Airlines.

To that end, the STB is to launch marketing efforts in Singapore, where Malaysia Airlines is launching a Singapore-Kuching-Miri service on October 31. The state government has approved MYR1mn to support a six-month advertising campaign within the Lion state.

There will also be marketing drives in Japan and South Korea, ahead of the scheduled launch of Kuching- Kota and Kinabalu-Haneda/Osaka and Kuching-Kota and Kinabalu-Seoul services by Malaysia Airlines in January 2011.
