New Zealand - Ultra-Fast Broadband Network - Moving into 2011

Description:
New Zealand is a world leader in the shaping of its telecommunications future. It is receiving international attention and is mentioned in many international case studies. There is also trans-sector support at a ministerial level of the Ultra-Fast Broadband (UFB) and the Rural Broadband Initiative (RBI). The Prime Minister is an enthusiastic supporter of the plans.
This is all seen by the UN and the OECD as a prerequisite for transforming national broadband plans into a success story. If it is not driven by government leadership it is nearly impossible to implement. However this does not mean that it all has to be government-owned or government-dominated. Each country will choose its own model – one that best suits its political, social, economic and geographic position.
This makes the New Zealand broadband projects unique. Countries can learn from what others are doing and use that information in their own plans.
This report focuses on where the plans can be improved, and on the unique challenges and opportunities that exist for New Zealand. Other reports on these topics provide further background and updated information.
