The 2005-2014 Outlook for the Hosiery Market in Russia (Russian Version)

BusinesStat, June 2010, Pages: 101

During the period from 2005 to 2008 the volume of manufacture of hosiery in Russia rose from 367.9 million pairs to 441.7 million pairs. During the same period import of hosiery into Russia became more than two times more – it increased from 447.9 million pairs to 1,125 million pairs. In 2009 the volume of import dropped to 1008.3 million pairs, but its decrease did not help the Russian manufacturers to augment the production volume. In 2009 manufacture of hosiery in the country decreased to 422.1 million pairs.

Devaluation of the rouble that caused the plunge of prices for imported goods contributed to the reduction of the import volume. In 2008-2009 the average cost of imported hosiery equaled 0.38 dollars per pair and 0.4 dollars per pair respectively, which denoted in roubles growth from 9.4 roubles per pair to 12.9 roubles per pair.

The second cause of the import decrease consisted in the tightening of control of infringing clothes import and sale. In particular, Chercizovskiy wholesale and retailing market was closed. In 2008 487.3 out of 1,125 million pairs of imported hosiery were fake. As strengthening of control of fake goods was not quite consistent, the share of shadow import of clothing into Russia is expected to begin growing in the nearest future.
