Healthcare Sector a Priority as Angola Kickstarts Infrastructural Development
Angola has one of the fastest-growing economies in the world. The last few years of economic success was marred by the recent economic downturn, compelling the Angolan Government to review its investments and prioritise the redevelopment and rehabilitation of the country’s infrastructure. Major social reform involving the education and healthcare sectors is currently underway and about $33 billion has been allocated for social programmes, including healthcare, in the Angolan spend plan for 2009-2010.

A key challenge to the healthcare industry is the limited access to healthcare services. “Angola’s badly damaged infrastructure makes access to healthcare services and medicines very difficult for the population,” explains the analyst. “Only 30.0 per cent of the population has access to essential medicines.”
Promisingly, the Angolan Government and foreign investors are channelling funds and resources into the rehabilitation and restructuring of the country’s infrastructure.
