Man-made fibre production in Taiwan increased by 3.9% to 2.1 mn tons in 2009, following an 18.6% decline in the previous year. The increase was due entirely to a 14.2% rise in staple fibre output as filament yarn production dropped for the second consecutive year.

At the same time domestic consumption of man-made fibres in Taiwan continued to decline—by 6.5% to 1.2 mn tons, following a 17.1% drop in 2008. The explanation lies in the fact that the entire increase in man-made fibre production in 2009 was exported. Overall, exports accounted for 41.1% of man-made fibre production in 2009, up from 34.5% a year earlier as domestic consumption declined. In the case of staple fibres alone, exports represented 70.9% of total production. There was also a decline in production of man-made fibre yarn in 2009. The main cause was a decline in domestic consumption of yarn for fabric production—which was reflected, in turn, in a fall in fabric output.
