This study provides an analysis of the World SONET/SDH related test equipment markets, examining the drivers, restraints, industry challenges impacting the market. In addition, an in-depth analysis of the competitive scenario along with market share analysis of various manufacturers in the industry has been provided. The base year is 2009 with forecasts running through 2013. The overall SONET/SDH test equipment market is segmented into Traditional SONET/SDH test equipments, Next-gen SONET/SDH test equipments, OTN test equipments and Jitter/Wander test equipments.
This Frost & Sullivan research service titled World SONET/SDH Related Test Equipment Market provides analysis on end-user segments, geographic regions (North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and Rest-of-World), and market share of participants. In this research, Frost & Sullivan's expert analysts thoroughly examine the following end-user markets: service providers and carriers, network equipment manufacturers, and private enterprises. They also cover the following applications: R&D, manufacturing and installation and maintenance.
Market Overview
Growth in Optical Transport Network and Packet-based Transport Technology Drives the Demand for SONET/SDH Related Test Equipment
The continued acceleration of reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM) deployments and rising popularity of packet optical transport network (P-OTN) technology have compelled transport networks to shift to a ubiquitous model based on the OTN technology. As this model enables the seamless transport of legacy and packet-based services, network operators will have to upgrade from the standard synchronous optical networking/synchronous digital hierarchy (SONET/SDH) equipment to OTN. This need for greater equipment sophistication has stoked interest in multiservice SONET provisioning platforms (MSPPs), which help service providers to offer new bundled services at the transport, switching, and routing layers of the network. This also allows them to dramatically decrease the time taken to provision new services while improving the flexibility of adding, migrating, or removing customers. “These provisioning platforms allow service providers to simplify their edge networks by consolidating the number of separate boxes needed to provide intelligent optical access,” says the analyst of this research. “They significantly improve the efficiency of SONET networks for transporting multiservice traffic.”
The market is also expected to gain a significant boost from the escalation in demand for bandwidth. While operators continue to provide feature-rich services, the requirement for bandwidth, global broadband, and high-speed Internet is likely to bolster the SONET/SDH and OTN test equipment markets. Meanwhile, with the increase in the amount of data being delivered in Ethernet format, the service providers and carriers are tilting toward newer standards such as Synchronous Ethernet and Precision Time Protocol (IEEE1588). As service providers continue to adopt novel standards and invest in providing data-based services, the demand for SONET/SDH test equipment is expected to swell.
However, the SONET/SDH and OTN test equipment market is finding it difficult to match strides with the developments in its end-user markets, as it has reached technology saturation. This lack of innovation prevents vendors from introducing products and product enhancements that could encourage new test equipment sales/upgrades. This, in turn, hikes pricing pressure from end users and competitors. During 2009, the global economic downturn created substantial pricing pressures for test equipment vendors, reducing their profit margin and revenue growth. “To be successful in such a market scenario, participants have to develop products and solutions that incorporate state-of -the-art features and are affordable,” notes the analyst. “Companies should also ensure global delivery of their products to successfully address the emerging markets in Asia Pacific that are under penetrated and offer better growth opportunities, in addition to serving the mature markets of North America and Western Europe.”
