South Africa's Liquid Fuels Industry 2009
Creamer Media, March 2010, Pages: 20
South Africa has a highly developed liquid fuels industry, consisting of crude oil refining and synthetic fuels (synfuels) production operations. Prior to 1954, all fuel consumed in South Africa was imported in refined form and distributed by four oil companies –BP, Caltex, Mobil and Shell – which were operating in the country as wholesale marketers. A local refining and synfuels industry emerged in South Africa in response to increased demand for fuels and the then South African government’s imperative to achieve selfsufficiency in fuel production.
Today, there are four crude oil refineries in South Africa, and two synfuels plants. In addition, the South African government intends developing a biofuels production capacity that will meet 2% of the country’s liquid road fuel requirements by 2012.
Petrol and diesel are the two major fuels used in South Africa. In line with global trends, South Africa has witnessed a significant increase in the demand for diesel-powered commercial and passenger vehicles, with diesel-engine vehicles having doubled their growth relative to petrol.
