Clothing market demand in Europe is forecast to grow by 2.5% per annum between 2009 and 2014, from US$217 bn to US$245 bn. The global radio frequency identification (RFID) market is forecast to be worth US$5.63 bn in 2010 while demand for RFID tags for use in apparel in the retail sector is expected to reach 300 mn in the same year. In the first half of 2010, China’s clothing exports increased by 16.2% and US clothing imports rose by 8.4% but EU clothing imports declined by 3.9%. Pakistan’s clothing exports were up by 2.5% in 2009/10.

Smart Apparel has signed an agreement with G-III Apparel Group to manufacture men’s clothing under the Andrew Marc and Marc New York brand names while Beluga has entered into an agreement with Perry Ellis International to design, manufacture and distribute apparel for boys under the Gotcha brand name. Li & Fung USA (LF USA) has signed two separate licensing agreements and a partnership agreement. The licensing agreements have been signed with TapouT and Sean John Clothing while the partnership agreement has been signed with Rachel Zoe, an American fashion stylist.

All companies whose financial reports are profiled in this report have posted increases in net sales, including Abercrombie & Fitch (up by 17%), Asos (up by 48%), Benetton Group (up by 1%), Gap (up by 2%), Gildan Activewear (up by 28%), H&M (up by 14%), Inditex (up by 14%), Levi Strauss & Co (up by 8%), Marks and Spencer (up by 4%), Perry Ellis International (up by 2%) and TJX Companies (up by 7%). Esprit has opened its largest store, in Germany, while Haglöfs has opened its first ever retail store, in Sweden. New stores have also been opened by Patagonia in Hawaii, by Uniqlo in Japan, and by Uniqlo (Malaysia) in Malaysia. JC Penney has opened 77 MNG by Mango concessions in its US department stores while The Warnaco Group has purchased 22 Calvin Klein Jeans retail stores and their related assets. Benetton Group is planning to open a number of new stores in Azerbaijan, Mongolia and Russia while TJX Companies will open its first Marshalls store in Canada. Meanwhile, new online retail stores have been opened by Adidas on Taobao’s retail website for Chinese consumers, by Gap for Canadian and UK customers, and by Zara for consumers in France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain and the UK.

Naturally Advanced Technologies (NAT) has received the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) Textile Auxiliary Agents certificate for its Crailar Organic Fibers. H&M and Levi Strauss & Co have announced a ban on the use of sandblasting during their manufacturing processes, and Uniqlo collected 2.62 mn garments for recycling and re-use during March-August 2010.
